How to Fix Steam Slow Download Speeds
Steam downloads crawling? Remove bandwidth caps, pick the best region, disable throttling software, and use a wired connection for full speed.
Why Steam Downloads Are Slow
Slow Steam downloads rarely mean your internet is slow — Steam throttles itself by default in several ways, and misconfigured settings, wrong download regions, and WiFi congestion are the usual suspects. These fixes target Steam-specific bottlenecks before blaming your ISP.
Step 1 — Remove Bandwidth Limits
Go to Steam → Settings → Downloads. Make sure Limit bandwidth to is unchecked. If you previously set a cap, Steam remembers it across sessions. While here, confirm Throttling during downloads (if present) is disabled.
Step 2 — Choose the Optimal Download Region
In the same Downloads panel, set Download Region to your closest geographic region — but if speeds are poor, try the second- or third-closest option. Regional server load varies by time of day; experiment to find the fastest route.
Step 3 — Pause Other Downloads and Streams
Steam shares bandwidth across concurrent downloads. Pause all but one game in the Downloads tab. Also stop 4K streaming, cloud backups, and large browser downloads on the same network — they compete for the same pipe.
Step 4 — Use a Wired Ethernet Connection
WiFi adds latency and drops packets that force retransmissions. Connect your PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Users routinely see 2–5x speed improvements switching from WiFi to wired, especially on 2.4 GHz networks.
Step 5 — Disable VPN and Traffic Shaping
VPNs route Steam traffic through distant servers, crippling download speed. Disable any VPN, proxy, or ISP traffic-shaping tool. If your ISP throttles Steam CDN traffic specifically, a VPN can paradoxically help — but test with it off first.
Step 6 — Clear Download Cache and Restart
Click Clear Download Cache in Download settings, restart Steam, and begin a fresh download. Corrupted CDN session data can cap speeds well below your line rate even with correct settings.
