How Do I Monetize on Twitch with Subs and Bits?

Understand Twitch subs, Bits, and ad revenue — set up tiers, design emotes, and build sustainable income as an Affiliate or Partner.

Monetization Requires Affiliate

You need Twitch Affiliate status (or Partner) to earn from subs, Bits, and ads. This guide assumes you are already Affiliate — if not, check the Path to Affiliate achievement in your Creator Dashboard first.

Subscriptions — Recurring Revenue

Viewers pay $4.99/month (Tier 1), $9.99 (Tier 2), or $24.99 (Tier 3) to support you. You receive roughly 50% of Tier 1 revenue ($2.50 per sub). Subscribers get ad-free viewing on your channel, your emotes, and a sub badge. Twitch handles billing and renewal automatically.

Set Up Sub Tiers and Emotes

Under Creator Dashboard → Preferences → Affiliate (or Partner), upload emotes for each tier. Start with one Tier 1 emote — a simple face or inside joke from your community. Emote requirements: 112 × 112 px, PNG, transparent background. Twitch auto-generates 28px and 56px versions.

Enable Tier 2 and Tier 3 only when you have enough emote slots and content to justify the price. Most small channels earn 95% of sub revenue from Tier 1.

Bits — Micro-Transactions

Bits are Twitch's virtual currency. Viewers buy Bits and cheer them in chat to trigger alert animations. You earn $0.01 per Bit cheered — 100 Bits equals one dollar. Enable Bits under Settings → Affiliate → Bits. Set minimum cheer amounts to avoid one-Bit spam if it distracts you.

Ad Revenue

As an Affiliate, pre-roll and mid-roll ads run on your channel. You control mid-roll frequency under Settings → Affiliate → Ads. Running three minutes of ads per hour is the common balance between revenue and viewer tolerance. Subscribers skip ads entirely, which makes subs more attractive to loyal viewers.

Prime Gaming Subs

Amazon Prime members get one free Tier 1 sub per month. Remind viewers at the start of each month — many Prime subs go unclaimed because viewers forget. A single "Prime sub reminder" at the top of your stream can add five to ten subs on the first of the month.

Payout Threshold and Schedule

Earnings accumulate until you hit the $50 minimum (or local equivalent). Payouts process ~15 days after month end via PayPal or direct deposit. Track earnings in Creator Dashboard → Payouts.

Revenue Growth Tips

  • Thank every sub and Bit on stream by name — recognition drives repeats
  • Create sub-only Discord channels or VODs for tangible perks
  • Run sub goal overlays for milestones (new emote slot at 25 subs)
  • Never beg — frame support as community membership, not charity

Subs and Bits reward connection. Focus on making viewers feel valued and monetization follows naturally.
