How Do I Fix YouTube Comments Disabled on My Channel?
Comments greyed out on every video? Re-enable them in Studio, fix audience settings, and clear account-level restrictions.
Why Comments Get Disabled
Comments may be off because you turned them off globally, set videos as "Made for kids," triggered a policy hold, or hit an account-level restriction. Sometimes a single video has comments disabled while the rest of the channel works — the fix depends on which layer blocked them.
Step 1 — Check Video-Level Comment Settings
In Studio → Content, click the video → Details scroll to Comments and ratings. Ensure Allow all comments is selected, not "Disable comments." Save and check the watch page logged out. Repeat for each affected video if you bulk-uploaded with comments off.
Step 2 — Review Channel-Wide Upload Defaults
Go to Settings → Upload defaults → Advanced settings. Confirm comments are allowed by default on new uploads. Also check Community settings under Channel → Advanced — some creators accidentally disable discussion features across the channel.
Step 3 — Fix "Made for Kids" Designation
Content designated for kids disables comments by law (COPPA). Under Settings → Channel → Advanced settings → Audience, verify whether you set the entire channel as made for kids. If your content is general audience, select "No, set this channel as not made for kids" and set per-video audience correctly going forward.
Step 4 — Look for Policy Holds
Videos under active review for spam, harassment, or sensitive content may have comments limited automatically. Check Studio for yellow or red policy icons. Resolve the underlying issue, edit if needed, and request a human review. Comment bans often lift after the video is cleared.
Step 5 — Account Restrictions and Community Guidelines
Repeated policy violations can temporarily disable comments channel-wide. Check Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and your email for notices from YouTube. Serve any active suspension period, remove violating content, and complete required training if offered.
Comments Disabled Checklist
- Enable comments on each video and in upload defaults
- Correct audience settings if content is not for children
- Resolve policy strikes or limited monetization flags
- Check feature eligibility for channel-level restrictions
- Test logged-out on watch page after saving changes
Comments are community infrastructure — keep them on unless you have a specific reason to disable them. Moderate with keyword filters and held-for-review queues rather than turning discussion off entirely.
